Market haul 5/23

I wish I could be awake and functioning by 8 a.m. more often. The market was gloriously peaceful this morning!

I was so excited to get:
Asparagus
Garlic chives
Green onions
Pea shoots
Mustard greens
Bok choy
Cilantro
Lettuce

It’s looking like a lot of stir-fries this week. After a week of adventures with my family, I really need the greens!

Farmers’ Market Madness

Was the St. Paul market ever crowded yesterday! But I still managed to snag some excellent things: corn, raspberries, green beans, bok choy, grape tomatoes, carrots, shallots, lettuce, and a head of broccoli as big as my head (only $2!!!) I also made it in time to get some pan de sal from A Toast to Bread. Also, the nice man who sold me the shallots gave me some hot peppers for free. It totally made my morning, and he’s got a customer for life!

I will definitely make a conscious effort to eat all these veggies, because I had a pretty unhealthy weekend in terms of eating (but in my defense, I was celebrating my birthday!)

As much as I love my downtown St. Paul farmers’ market, I also like the satellite markets in the ‘burbs or other parts of St. Paul. I’ve consistently found new and exciting things at the Andover satellite market, like zucchini blossoms and now this yu choy/yu choy sum. I’ve been enjoying it in sinigang broth, stir-fried with veggie oyster sauce, or simply fried with garlic, a splash of veggie broth or water, and a sprinkle of sugar.
By the way, this slideshow inspired me to try keeping the yu choy on the counter, like cut flowers. I think I’m on to something here - the greens have kept really well, and it gives me the added benefit of remembering to cook/eat them instead of forgetting they’re buried in the crisper. And the flowers are pretty, to boot!

Malabar spinach from Saint Paul Farmers Market. I ate this veggie every week as a kid, usually prepared this way.

The impromptu lunch date and farmers market trip took precedence over homework today. I brought home wax beans, malabar spinach (alugbati) and purple potatoes.
